Do you have a loved garment or bag that you love but needs some repairs. Or did you pick up something thrifting that needs a little change to be perfect? Have you always wanted to learn to sew by hand? This is the class for you. In this hand sewing class students will learn hand sewing, basic Sashiko stitches, how to patch and repair a rip or hole, reinforce a worn area or add some embroidering embellishments.

Students are encouraged to bring a project to mend or alter, but can also practice on sample garments and fabrics provided. Medium-weight, woven fabrics work best for beginners; such as denim, cotton or linen.

Beaded Ring Workshop

Discover the ancient peyote stitch in a fun, hands-on class and create a bold ring while learning the basics of bead weaving.

What you’ll do

Join us for a playful dive into an ancient craft. The peyote stitch has been used for thousands of years across many cultures. In this fun class you’ll create a bold beautiful ring using the Even Count Flat Peyote stitch. We’ll cover everything you need to confidently start your own bead weaving journey.

All materials (thread, needles, beads) will be provided for the workshop. If students would like to buy needles and thread to take home they can purchase them directly from the instructor after the workshop for a minimal fee. Resources for beading supplies will also be provided.

Finger dexterity and good close-up vision are needed for this workshop. Bring your best reading glasses!

Sashiko Mending

Learn Sashiko mending: patch, reinforce, and decorate garments with traditional Japanese stitching. Practice on your clothes or provided fabric.

What you’ll do

This class introduces the technique of Sashiko mending. With humble beginnings in rural Japan, Sashiko’s running stitch insulated work garments for warmth and longevity. Learn how to patch and repair a rip or hole, reinforce a worn area, and prepare distressed textile in order to draw a Sashiko grid and stitch a pattern. Choose from a variety of traditional Sashiko patterns. Bring in one or two garments to assess for mending or decorating. Medium-weight, woven fabrics work best; such as denim, cotton or linen. If desired, students may simply practice a Sashiko pattern or two on sampler patches provided.

All supplies are provided (thread, needles, thimble, fabric to practice on, chalk, patterns, scraps to use as patches). Students will take home their two needles, twenty-two yards of cotton Sashiko thread, and a Sashiko thimble.
